A Winged Victory for the Sullen/Atomos VII/Kranky
A beautiful album. A Winged Victory for the Sullen does not disappoint with its usual ambient but strong strings and soundscapes. Touches of piano, sound effects, and misc. instruments really make the songs as good as they are. The third track is the best, not to say the first two aren’t just as good. All of the tracks feel warm, safe, and comforting. No FCCs
Review by Alan
- 8:00; Slow string movement with a gentle backbone and intermittent swells. Far away drum accents and robust cello (?) licks lead into a triumphant yet humble final push that fades to the end
- 4:10; sad piano notes tiptoe around the background current of strings
- 13:09; moist breathing amidst a humid east coast summer backyard complete with frogs and bugs. strings guide you with a strong hand up into cavernous strings and vocalizations. waves of static and strings crash into you. it doesn’t really crescendo just swirls up for the last 2/3s of the song. glockenspiel get caught up in the swirl like sprinkles in soft serve ice cream. then you’re back home
