Fucked Up, Glass Boys. Hardcore/ punk/ alt rock/ indie rock. Glass Boys is the fourth LP from Toronto’s Fucked Up and follow up to their ass kicking “Rock Opera” David Comes To Life. This band is famous for destroying two MTV Live sets and not caring, two Polaris nominations, and a profound love of vinyl. Sadly, they’ve taken tasteless stage names like Concentration Camp (Guitar), Mustard Gas (Bass), etc. but make up for it with an art rock spin on punk music and lyrics that are often introspective or about love. In my mind this is an interesting and welcomed deviation from classical punk motifs, e.g. the desire to rip the system a new one. However, Fucked Up has its detractors, who argue that their lyrics are more sophisticated than the medium in which they are presented and that they are more “rage within the machine”. I disagree and hope that you conclude the same. This album is good, and deeply personal, but does not match David Comes to Live. Fucked Up’s style can be described as mid paced hardcore punk with some poppy elements, especially around the guitar, and vocals that are raspy, screaming, guttural and constant. RIYL: Titus Andronicus, White Lung, Perfect Pussy, Metz, Pissed Jeans, The Men, Cloak/Dagger. All Tracks are FCC clean, except 10.
.(5:05) *Introspective. Mid pace, heavy guitar and screaming vocals.
.(3:19) *Phrasing is a little awkward. Guitar is soaring and drums create the pace.
.(3:24) **Mixed acoustic and electric guitar. Excellent song.
.(3:48) **“It’s the privilege of mass delusion”
.(5:06) *Same deal, mid pace, heavy guitar, and screaming vocals.
.(3:51) ***Awesome song.
.(3:51) ** Still awesome.
.(3:57) Same deal, mid pace, heavy guitar and scream.
.(3:49) **Great song. Slower with some tempo changes. “We express disdain.”
.(6:18) FCC “FUCK” Cool intro. One of the album’s best songs.
