Composer Jean-Pascal Beintus, Grammy-winner for Wolf Tracks and The 11th Hour, has orchestrated Japanese children’s songs, known as Shoka, or school songs, which were composed in the Western musical style during the Meiji Restoration (late 19th - early 20th cent.), when Japan opened itself to the West after 250 years of isolation. They set poetic texts to beautiful melodies, as one would expect of children’s songs. Some are melancholy, some wondering, some playful. Diana Damrau is acclaimed as the “leading coloratura soprano in the world,” and Beintus’ lush orchestrations are harmonically rich, with inventive play of meter. Any or all of these tracks will charm listeners, creating a mood of reverie and wonder.
