American composer Edward Burlingame Hill (1872-1960) was frequently played in concert halls of the 1930's and 1940's, but this CD is the first recordings of these works. Hill taught Leonard Bernstein, Walter Piston, Randall Thompson, Elliot Carter among others. His works on this disk are tonal and quite enjoyable, some demonstrating elements of Jazz. Hill's 1926 Divertimento for Piano and Orchestra evokes Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue (written just two years before). Gershwin’s rhapsody is a jazz piece cast in a symphonic mold. Classically trained Hill uses jazz elements more politely. Symphony No. 4 is an exciting and lively work, lyrical, energetic and often quite beautiful. The 1st mvmt is impassioned. The 2nd ranges from tender to grandiose. The 3rd is lighter, joyful and ends in high spirits. Concertino No. 1 displays a mildly martial opening section, a dreamy middle, and a joyous, triumphant finale. Concertino No. 2 opens passionately, plays with lovely, tender melodies in the middle section before entering its celebratory closing section.
