Later version of seminal London psyche prog Jazz outfit. Every song blends into next as its a live recording, so some songs are veritable intros to the next. I suggest playing on continuous to avoid cold stops and pot down instead. The last two tracks (the encore) go together as one good cohesive song. This version of the band is without R. Wyatt, is far more prog-jazz than psychedelic. Smoking stuff. From Cuneiform website: “On July 4, 1974, Soft Machine were invited to perform at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, sharing the spotlight with such headliners as Billy Cobham’s Spectrum, Larry Coryell’s Eleventh House and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. This alone was evidence of the band being a dominant presence on the now widely popular jazz-rock scene, which had evolved out of the unique and edgy sound that the band had pioneered a few years before.”
1) (16:47) reverent applause with quiet fade in then stalwart prog Jazz, false ending midway
2)* (5:16) a pretty feel with piano, mellow bass led combine with next track for sure
3)* (4:15) play with previous a FUCKING epic bass solo is involved that hits a fuzz box and is ASTRONOMICAL
4) (3:10) previous leads into kicking ass prog Jazz
5)* (4:28) more cool prog nice soaring feel
6) (2:21) experimental interlude feel,noisy weird
7) (3:02) mellow trippy prog
8) (4:28) picks up pace with tenor sax, fusion Jazz extraordinaire, crazed
9) (0:22)
10) (4:46) cool prog Jazz quickly turns into an extended drum solo, ends solo right at next track
11) (3:09) right out of previous, continues previous theme then ends midway and the last 2 min is crowd summoning an encore
12) (2:08) spacey, an intro to next (play together)
13) (5:43) cool mellow groove, play w previous, last minute is applause and festival host introducing the band members
