Mexico City’s O Tortuga is a quartet of young dudes that seems obsessed with surfing culture and hanging out at the beach night and day. Their self-titled debut album features a fast and energetic set of songs where surf, punk-pop and garage rock merge together keeping things crisp, youthful and noisy. Lots of great guitars solos with unrecognizable effects, drowned vocals and inventive beat changes are among my favorite elements on this debut album. ¡Sol y playa para siempre!
RIYL: Los Vigilantes, Los Blenders, La Luz, The Astronauts, and, Dinosaurios Surf Club.
FCC CLEAN!
Recommended Tracks: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 11
1. (2:30) *Mi Amor es el Mar – Dreamy Low-fi surfy pop opener. Breezy!
2. (2:49) **Palma Linda – Poppy and dancy tune with great guitar work. ¡Vamos a la playa!
3. (3:08) *Estu – Contagious exercise of 1960’ surf pop music aesthetics. Lots of vocals drowned with echo effects, and guitars, and more guitars. Surf’s up!
4. (3:37) Tatiana – Melancholic pop. Vocal-driven tune.
5. (3:07) Ferrari – More melancholic pop here.
6. (1:39) **Cool – Energetic tune with impeccable guitars. One of my favorites.
7. (2:59) *Siempre Vago – Pulsating guitars, steady fast beat, great guitar surf solo.
8. (2:24) *Gente Ovni – More vivacious guitars and fast beats.
9. (2:51) **Cómo Ves – Another great exercise in1960’ surf pop music aesthetics with a punk punch. Beach sand everywhere!
10. (2:29) Nena Pálida – American 1970’s garage rock 101. Davila 666 was here.
11. (1:59) *Dos Palabras Diversión – Punker with all the right punches.
