Zomba Prison Project-”I Have No Everything Here”
Amazing CD from inside a maximum security prison in one of the poorest countries on earth (Malawi) where male prisoners get instruments and form bands and women just get to sing (!). Well-performed by inmates and recorded by westerners; no FCC's (it's all in local Bantu languages except for a couple of songs in English); despite the dire-sounding titles and situations, the music has a very upbeat, pleasing sound; this is a profound testament of the power of music and what it means to be human
*1-Listen to Me (or I will Kick Your Ass) -(2:45) – moving (solo and with harmony) in Malawi (no FCC's except English title!) with guitar
2-Women Today Take Care of Business – (2:18) – solo, with string bass type accompaniment and some soprano refrains & handclaps
3-Please, Don't Kill My Child- (4:51)- nice string intro, falsetto singing; repetitive accompaniment slightly wobbly but still very listenable
*4-A Message (I Will Take You) (3:02) – sounds like South African music, nice beat, harmony
*5-Jealous Neighbor (3:00)- starts a capella solo – nice voice, adds harmony, then subtracts it; then adds
*6-I See the Whole World Dying of AIDS- (2:37) – singing with guitar and rhythm instruments; very upbeat compared with the title
7-Give me Back My Child - (:52) – a capella chant
**8-The Floods – (2:44) – starts with nice string playing; beautiful harmonies
9-Taking My Life --(:50)- female solo with a little accompaniment; a complaint
10-House of the Dance - (:14) – traditional –yelling, drums
11-Don't Hate Me (1:06) - female solo with a little accompaniment and ululation at end
12-Prison of Sinners (1:02)- female solo with a little accompaniment (:36)
13-When They See Me Dance --(:36) – a capella female with yelling
14-Last Wishes - :(41) female singing with accompaniment
*15-The Weary & the Burdened – (1:07) – reminiscent of American blues singing and accompaniment
16-I Kill No More – (:20)-- female a capella in English!
17-I Am Alone (1:54) – female a capella
18-Goodbye, All My Friends (:29) – female a capella in English! (more ot less)
19-Forgiveness (:44) – singing with accompaniment
20-Let's Go!!! – (:46) – singing with accompaniment
