Atonal, raw, strung-out punk. Wow are these guys prolific. Since KZSU got this Austin, TX trio's second single in 2012, Spray Paint have released five albums and built up a small following. This new album finds them continuing to hone their style: jagged, coiled, angular 4 AM warehouse jams with deadpan group vocals, and lyrics about people barely scraping their way through daily life. I could imagine a young Raymond Carver hearing The Intelligence and starting a band like this. This is GREAT. Favorites: 3, 4, 5, 9. FCC WARNING: 6, 7. (9, 10 are clean edits.)
1. (4:03)—Slow, plodding, with a descending noir bassline.
2. (1:46)—Mid-tempo, off-kilter, with scraping noises.
3. *(3:06)—Mid-tempo, bashy, vaguely surfy.
4. *(5:53)—Mid-tempo, driving, like krautrock played by people who've never tuned their instruments. Warped synths.
5. *(3:08)—Medium-slow, metallic like My Disco. Some actual screaming.
6. (1:41)—FCC. Track 10 is the clean version.
7. (6:13)—FCC. Track 9 is the clean version.
8. (2:37)—Instrumental. Intense 80s action soundtrack synth drone.
9. *(6:14)—Fast, ominous, relentless, loud, like their old song “Spock Fingers.” Last 30 seconds are distant noise.
10. (1:42)—Fast mosh pit music. The single, if such a thing existed.
