ECLECTIC JAZZ

Multi-reed player Chris Potter leads a great big group with guitars, drums, two bassists, mallet instruments, and a Classical string quartet. The music is challenging at times, ranging from beautiful & peaceful to wild & crazy. Tracks 2-5 form the “Imaginary Cities” suite.

All instrumental. No FCC issues.

1 *** Slow. A sad cello starts quietly. The remaining strings join, then the jazz players. Grows to forte but remains calm & spiritual. Gorgeous, emotional, uplifting. (8:08)
2 Slow. Mellow. String quartet, piano & double bass (arco) start. Tenor sax joins after a bit. Lovely playing but not as emotionally appealing as track #1. (8:35)
3 ** Mid-fast. Lively start with pizzicato strings. Perky & syncopated. Electric marimba adds to the happy feel. Energetic saxophone lead. (8:45)
4 * Slow. Minimal solo piano. Then a bass clarinet lead, screeching violin, and a hint of vibraphone all contribute to a spooky, anxious feel. The most avant-garde piece. (7:23)
5 * Drummer starts. Band joins with shimmering, dreamlike feel. Tenor sax finally takes over the lead. Not avant-garde: straight ahead jazz with string backing. (11:33)
6 Mid-fast. Lively. Led by tenor sax with electric guitar, electric bass, and vibes. The strings here are annoying and syrupy. (8:37)
7 Mid-tempo. Modern Classical string quartet playing with much force, some dissonance. Bass clarinet, piano & drums enter. It’s slower and eerie. Quite an odd piece. (6:10)
8 Mid-slow. Led by warm tenor sax. Lush & melodic with enough rhythm section to keep things together. There’s a piano-led bridge. (12:03)
