Homage to the great Egyptian singer, Um Kalthoum, by Ibrahim Maalouf, trumpet player and composer; jazz transcription of “Alf Leyla We Lail” (1001 nights) sung by Kalthoum
NO FCC's (all instrumental); Favorite tracks: 3, 4, 5, 7
1 –3:54 –Intro – starts with western jazz and segues into more Middle Eastern sound, piano with trumpet solo
2- 4:46 – more improv; lots of piano and trumpet; motif repeats and then fades
*3-3:34 –more uptempo beginning with piano and drums; some syncopation; draws energy as motif repeats with trumpet
*4 -6:15 –starts slow, contemplative, trumpet with piano echoing motif, picks up
**5- 7:26 – faster, heavier beat, back and forth between horn and piano with drum underneath, catchy
6- 15:20- fuller orchestra sound, more jazz-like, less Middle Eastern sounding, lots of piano noodling and riffs
*7-10:15 –peppy beginning, segues to modal/minor; circles a little; goes back to mainstream sounding jazz, then starts circling again with a skipping-style beat; slows again into a trumpet taqseem, picks up for final section; bass solo, drum solo, back to basic motif for reprise
