Dark atmospheric guitars, enthralling raw vocals and feedback fold and release into intense worlds of emotion and suffering. Noticeably darker in tone than her previous record and contains more hints of a full-band structure. The lyrics are astounding and deal with emotional problems, the fragility of humanity, and the elisions of the temporal and the transcendent. Songs generally begin with sparse, heavily reverbed guitar and get metal after a few minutes, showcasing the different territories Emma has explored as a solo artist and member of the gothic-metal-post-rock bands Marriages and Red Sparowes. Fans of Chelsea Wolfe, Swans, Tara Jane O’Neil will enjoy.
1. (3:40) Marked for Death—Sparse guitar and vocal passages switch off with a louder chorus, brief guitar solo in last minute.
2. (4:59) **** Protection—Quicker tempo. Thunderous, blown-out guitars drowned in feedback. More of a full-band, rock feel.
3. (5:20) *** Medusa—Drifting, chiming voice, keys, acoustic guitar arrangement that builds drums gradually.
4. (4:34) **** Hand of God—Somber fingerpicked guitar and clear vocals, dusty keys, some strummed passages. Picks up in last minute. One of my favorite tracks of the year. This reminds me strongly of the song “Run Forever” from her previous record. “I wish the Hand of God would cover the faces and cover the traces of lovers lost”
5. (5:10) *** Heaven—Acoustic guitar, clear vocals, very soft touches of drums and strings. Gets metal three minutes in.
6. (4:24) So, Come—Plodding beat, reverb, snarling vocals, hits harder at the halfway point.
7. (4:15) Furious Angel—Gleaming. Strings and guitars accompany a delicate vocal-driven melody. Quickens in the second half before a long fade.
8. (5:53) **** Real Big Sky—Best track. Gripping, earnest voice and heavily-distorted acoustic guitar. Some of the most powerful lyrics on the record. “I can’t wait to kiss the face of The Big Sky, won’t you stay here for a while with me, my Child”
