ECLECTIC JAZZ ON STRINGS
Violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and bassist Stanley Clarke collaborated 20 years ago on an electric album with Al DiMeola. Now they team up with French guitarist Bireli Lagrene for an acoustic set of mixed originals and standards. RIYL early Return to Forever, Gypsy swing, bossa nova, etc.
All instrumental. No FCC issues.
1 * Mid-fast. Upbeat and peppy, a blend of modern & Gypsy jazz. Exuberant violin. (3:30)
2 Mid-fast. Improvisational and sort of funky. Strong interplay. (6:15)
3 Slow. Ballad sounds grating on violin vs original saxophone. Lovely bass solo. (7:30)
4 ** Fast. Hard driving bebop. Good solos by all. (3:29)
5 * Mid-fast. Django’s famous tune led mainly by the violin. Jaunty, lively. (5:16)
6 Slow. Guitar arpeggios & arco bass intro, then violin & guitar trade improv’d solos. (5:39)
7 Mid-fast. Coltrane classic oddly sped up on violin. Nice walking bass line. (6:17)
8 Slow. A mixed bag. Soft and dreamy, but not especially pleasant. (6:14)
9 * Joe Zawinul wrote this for Cannonball. It’s slower here, but surprisingly good. (6:31)
10 Mid-fast. Light and breezy. Enjoyable, soft jazz. (4:00)
