SOUL JAZZ / R&B

Kandace Springs (piano & voice) put out an EP in 2014. Here’s her first full length album. Springs has a lovely, warm voice. Sadly, there’s too much sameness in the song selection. Accompaniment includes (on various tracks) acoustic & electric guitar, organ, vibes, and percussion. Guest Terence Blanchard adds his trumpet to tracks 2 & 7.

No FCC issues.

1 Mid-tempo. (3:51)
2 ** Very slow, very deep. Excellent vocal with sensitive trumpet. (3:24)
3 Mid-slow. Pretty pop ballad. Well sung, but very lightweight. (3:46)
4 * Mid-slow. Breakup song with a happy bounce. Nice organ & backup singers. (3:40)
5 * Mid-fast. More jazzy than the previous few. Just her voice with drums & organ. (4:45)
6 Slow. Another pretty ballad. Not much to it. Odd lyrics. (3:09)
7 ** Slow. Post breakup sadness. Gorgeous vocal and trumpet. (5:04)
8 Slow. Yet another slow ballad. Yet again it’s pretty, but… (3:49)
9 ** Slow. Surprisingly good re-do of War’s monster 70s hit. Slower, sexier. (4:27)
10 Slow. Argh. Another slow, sad breakup song. (4:05)
11 Slow. Of the many slow ballad, somewhat better. Deeper lyrics. Playful piano. (3:07)
