The Soul of John Black Early in the Moanin’
Reviewed by KKray
Great album. Soulful, voluminous, evocative, and well made. If you’re dancing to it: there are swing tunes and slow-dance tunes. Consistent style until the last two. Would recommend for any show with blues, jazz, folk, even pop (do we have that at KZSU?). No FCCs detected.
(4:28) ***Feverish and soulful. Great vocals. Steady beat, not fast or slow.
(4:06) **Funky and fun. Repetitive in a good way. Steady beat, pretty slow. About yard work, but surprisingly engaging.
(4:35) ***Dark, slow, soulful/blues-y song. Nice vocals. Shout outs to Chicago throughout. Song about rejected/unrequited love.
(2:59) ****Very catchy, fast paced. Another song about being treated wrong by a lover and rejected. Great lyrics.
(3:48) *Slower catchy love song. Sweet and easy. Slow but it grows on you.
(4:26) ***Neat lyrics. Great vocals. Slow and soulful. Great beat, you’ll be tapping your heels.
(3:57) ***Fast paced, great beat. Another toe-tapper. More funky lyrics. Sultry and dark.
(4:36) ***Slow and soulful ballad about...well...exactly what the song is called. Sultry and romantic.
(4:22) **Melancholy, slower, different style than the others. More poppy, less soulful. Uplifting.
(3:47) *Slow and melancholy, lots of instrumentals.
