Residents? Soft Machine? Monitor? Incredible nugget release dug up of obscure yet notorious Canadian composer who worked in London in the late 60's mostly. He broke free of the Pink Floyd, Soft Machine constraints of the day choosing to go the route of John Cage, Stockhausen, Steve Reich, exploring tapes and early Moogs, what was then referred to as "electronic music". He was trained, versed in jazz; sax was his primary instrument and it finds its way into most of this in strange lovely ways. Not enough space to describe how cool and avante, minimal yet lush, low fi yet complex this stuff is, what an unbelievable CD set this is and how lucky we are to have it. Instead, check out the bazillion page booklet with photos that accompanies it. THIS is the reason we volunteer at KZSU!
Disc: Long Lost Relatives/Syrinx 1) (3:34) trippy wood winds and efx at first then an ultra cool pensive subtle hip shaker 2) (6:07) organic experimental intro then a bouncy tribal rhythm under slow phrased sax, killer key leads, quiet outro 3) (8:56) dark spooky intro, sawtooth moog, then a quiet pretty waltz like theme with cool moog tones, no drums. 4)* (8:06) excellent fuzzy intro, sax heavy slow experimental plod, primo stuff, launches into the tribal congas then slows. 5) (2:53) electronics below a pretty cinematic classical tone 6) (1:50) early synth pop, rock, simple and upbeat, with sax 7) (2:54) congas upbeat w slow phrased sax and keys 8) (3:40) cool almost funky synth congas, choral female vocals appear strangely 9) (2:59) chill dark 10) (4:52) quiet and cinematic, melancholy 11) (1:49) simple moog composition. 12) (10:26) begins synth only melodies slowly build and subliminal conga rhythm joins, epic in its simplicity 13) (5:14) chill electronics, moog melodies then piano takes over, simple 3/4 14) (2:17) dark slow simple 15) (11:34) synth solo begins, then conga fueled rhythmic melodies all synth, gets very epic, bizarre
