Leon Redbone, “Long Way from Home”
Label: August Records Inc
Reviewed by: Kim Walter, June 2017
Early recordings of legendary blues/jazz musician, Leon Redbone. These date from 1972, and you can already hear his unique mix of prewar jazz, folk and blues that has been inspiring musicians for over four decades Best for me: 2, 3, 4, 6, 13, 14, 16, 17.
1. slow/med – old style blues
2. slow – cowboy ballad, yodels at end.
3. slow – harmonica, classic cowboy song with yodeling, “TB Blues”
4. med – upbeat finger picking song, advice to being happy
5. med – fun, kazoo, some scat
6. slow – vocals and guitar
7. slow – classic blues, voice & guitar
8. slow – Mississippi River blues style
9. slow – blues
10. slow/med – cowboy ballad
11. slow/med - old timey
12. slow – old timey
13. slow – unique guitar strum
14. slow – mellow “cat man blues”
15. slow – story set to guitar, unique vocalizations
16. slow – yodeling
17. slow – called “yodeling cowboy”, mix of two yodeling styles (Alpine and cowboy)
18. slow - “Bootleg Blues”
