Ambient, jazzy, underwater dream atmospheres and surreal vox, strange beats. Collaboration between UK-based Virginia Wing, a dream pop band, and XAM Duo, a group that is more ambient/drone. One of my favorite new records—
“an all-encompassing new universe of sound with references from the mutated world percussion of Holger Czukay, the transportive saxophone of Pharoah Sanders, and the devotional music of Alice Coltrane.”
Related: Hookworms, Neu, Stereolab, ambient jazz
Favorites: 1, 2, 5, 6, 7
1. (20:24) * Birch Polygon—Smoky slowly-unraveling synth, sax and wordless vox, more chimey in second half
2. (3:15) * Yesterday’s Guest—Weird off-kilter vox and instruments, steady beat
3. (4:29) Look Again—Thick droning ambient w/ melted dream vox
4. (2:02) Melon Pan—Brushed chimes and keys, haphazard colorful, voices talking
5. (5:06) * Good Roads Fair Weather—Intense beat and fairytale vox, takes you on a journey w/ some excellent sax, light piano
6. (4:32) ** Person to Person—Kraut beat, sweet emotive sax and electric guitar, One of my fav tracks of the year
7. (7:52) ** A Tunnel—Slow soft, subdued late night, dreamy wandering sax and surreal vox that are spoken
