INDIE FOLK POP
Woodpigeon is a Canadian-based “collective” led by songwriter Mark Andrew Hamilton. This is album is a strong set of songs: well written and well produced. It features well crafted melodies, good singing, mostly melancholy lyrics (on leaflet inside), intriguing rhythms, and attractive, lush instrumentation. Compare to Camera Obsura, Sufjan Stevens.
FCC violation in #4
1 ** Slow. Lovely, dreamy adaptation of the Cole Porter - Roy Rogers - (and now Killers) cowboy song. Good singing; gentle guitars, flute, synth, drums. Instrumental coda. (4:15)
2 Very slow. Haunting & anxious. Sad lyric. Soft accompaniment; distant trumpet. (4:23)
3 * Slow. Ironic critique of competitive or war-like clichés. Lush & pretty protest. (5:10)
4 (FCC: “fucking”) Protesting Canada going to war (I think). Good but for the FCC. (3:05)
5 ** Very slow. Sad & lovely. The feeling of falling. Graceful guitar & perc. (5:30)
6 * Slow. Breakup ballad: love betrayed. Spare accompaniment. Nice backing voices. (3:18)
7 Very slow. Quiet, lovely song about bitterness and anger. Minimal. (3:02)
8 Very slow. Another sad breakup song. Voice, soft guitar & drums; a bit of synth. (4:11)
9 Slow. Guitar & wood flute intro. Beautifully sung telling-off. Out w bass & drums. (4:19)
10 * Slow. The Earth (personified) fights back with flood and storm. Spooky. Cool. (4:37)
11 Very slow. Spare, tense verses; but pretty, melodic refrain. Voice & guitars.
Note: Song ends ~ 4:40; hidden acoustic instrumental track starts ~ 5:45 (7:21 total)
