Massachusetts band formed in 1981 as part of the early 80’s new psych revival (see also Yard Trauma, The Fourgiven, Marshmellow Overcoat) had a brief existence before reforming 15 years later and then getting serious about joining in the New Psych (re)Discovery of recent years, releasing a few CDs since about 2011. This one is a collection of super catchy tunes, all with great beats that lumps them in with the hip shaking Wooden Shjips. Dark morose cynicism permeates songs lyrically belying the bright and cheery 60’s flavored garage rock. Like if Paul Revere and the Raiders played Black Flag or Culturcide songs. All tracks are great. Tune in, turn on, drop. Or at least microdose.
1) (3:09) poppy upbeat with infectious beat a la Wooden Shjips 2)* (2:55) urgent upbeat, pretty sure this is an ode to DJT : “the man who killed reality” 3) (3:32) bouncy fun 60’s sunny feel despite lyrics 4)* (3:22) bit of a rockin riff, swirling synth space sounds, another upbeat winner “everything you know is wrong” 5)* (4:10) slower more mindful twang guitar, a bit more chill and groovy 6) (3:08) fun and bouncy, with full on Big Muff 60’s fuzz guitar tones 7)* (2:48) real cool beat, smattering of Kinks power chords, killer, awesome lyrics about humans being “stupid little monkeys stinking up the place” 8) (3:08) rocker feeling, teenaged rock and roll angst: “dream about monster riffs” 9) (3:40) “warm sinking feeling”, upbeat despite dark lyrics 10)* (3:40) minor chords, slight twang surf spooky feel, “on your last day on earth”
