INDIE FOLK-POP SINGER-SONGWRITER
The sometimes frontwoman of Laney Jones and the Spirits is here with a solo LP, her third overall. A Berklee College-trained songwriter, Jones either wrote or co-wrote all the songs. There’s some depth and thoughtfulness in the lyrics. She sings well, with a sweet, mildly countryish voice, and plays guitar, banjo, ukulele, harmonica, and keys.
No FCC issues.
1 Mid-slow. Gentle, a little sad. Strummed guitar, steel guitar, a hint of keys. (2:46)
2 ** Mid-tempo. Cute as can be. Happy-go-lucky. Pogo-dance fun. Guitars & drums. (3:50)
3 * Mid-tempo. Ukulele lead in. Out of kilter love song. Sweet & likable. (3:46)
4 * Mid-slow. Bluesy non-love song. Big Cheryl Crow voice. Banjo & guitar break. (4:38)
5 ** Mid-fast. Positive, “let’s stick together” theme. Catchy melody. Very nice. (4:01)
6 * Mid-fast. Elec guitar, drums, harmonica. “You make things ok.” Put a smile on. (4:06)
7 Slow. Spooky sax & clarinet intro. Slinky chanteuse thing doesn’t work for her. (3:28)
8 * Slow, spare acoustic at first; gets bigger, faster. Uplifting theme. Big, full voice. (3:36)
9 ** Slow. Powerful personal statement. Great song. I can imagine Adele singing it. (4:35)
10 Slow. Toss-off little ditty with uke and banjo. (3:49)
