“Quiet and Peace” Buffalo Tom
Buffalo Tom is an alt rock/power pop trio from Boston that has been making music since the mid-1980s. Guitarist-lead vocalist and main songwriter, Bill Janovitz; bassist-vocalist and sometimes writer, Chris Colbourn; and drummer (and band namesake), Tom Maginnis, had several Top 20 albums in the 1990s, then took a ten-year hiatus. This latest album is the band’s third since returning in 2007. The 11-song set draws upon the band’s rich 90s alt-rock heritage and even foundational rock pioneered by 1960s bands such as the Byrds or Buffalo Springfield (the other contributor to the band’s name) — while updating it with modern melodic elements. RIYL: Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Allman Brothers Band, or the Lemonheads. Release date is March 2, 2018 — so you can be one of the first to play it!

Recommended: 3, 11, 1, 4, 6, 9. No FCCs noted.

1. (3:28) All Be Gone — Searing guitar rocker. Rich harmonized vocals in choruses. Lyrics examine the passage of time, a theme throughout the album. ***
2. (2:29) Overtime — Slower tempo. Big reverbed guitar. Lead vocals are reminiscent of some Southern rock. Nice female backing vocals.
3. (3:16) Roman Cars — Mid-tempo, melodic folk-rock. Guitar and Hammond organ. Written and sung by Chris Colbourn. ****
4. (6:02) Freckles — Americana toe-tapper. Piano and acoustic guitar. Wistful vocals. Builds to big jam at end. ***
5. (3:01) Cat v. Mouse — Jangle rock, with a hint of alt-country.
6. (3:10) Lonely Fast and Deep — Punky with great guitar work. Driving drums. ***
7. (3:04) See High the Hemlock Grows — Nice swing to this waltz. Lilting vocals.
8. (2:58) In the Ice — Even more jangly rock. Anthemic Southern vocals.
9. (4:20) Least That We Can Do — Charging guitar rock with big reverb. Electric and acoustic guitar in mix. Stop-and-go drumming. ***
10. (3:16) Slow Down — Starts kind of melancholy and sentimental, then builds to a roaring finish. Reminiscent of Creed?
11. (5:19) The Only Living Boy in New York — Fabulous cover of Simon & Garfunkel tune from 1970. Sad and hopeful at the same time. Soaring harmonized vocals. A hint of pedal steel guitar at places. ****
