Eugene Oregon doom band with deep roots in heavy music (formed in 1996) release masterpiece of crushing walls of doom. Elements of progressive metal seeps through a la Isis, Neurosis. Trio, vocals switch from evil mean to a near operatic lush melodic contrast (but not douchey like an 80’s hair metal bullshit band). No wanking, great use of these instruments. The guitar is perfect – what happens when a bassist switches to guitar and forms this band. Solid long songs. Abandon all hope, flee ye to thy woods and harmonize with the Spotted Owl.
1)* (10:33) big heavy chords and drums intro, then super cool slow waltzing minor toned dissonance, heavy slow phrased lush melodic vocals, amazing 2)* (9:50) slow plod but double time guitar strum, machine industrial evil feel as vocals turn mean, nasty 3)* (9:43) hollow dissonant bass starts this, nice and slow, epic, like what the Swans dream after a severe head injury 4) (5:38) very slow and creepy if mysterious, sparse, almost 4AD spooky and beautiful, a good full 3 minutes before it gels, doomy evil guttural vocs appear with full band, blends into the next 5)* (16:27) play together with previous for an epic 22 minutes: this starts with “nice” guitar picking, cool chords, with tasteful delay, band comes in slowly, then “nice” vocals, melodic, really pleasing, 6) (7:05) progressive feel shines through, Isis, Neurosis come to mind 7) (14:21) starts quiet with echoey pretty guitar, returns to big swaying ¾ feel, nothing doomy, “nice”, swirls about in tasteful flange type effects gets very repetitious and hypnotic, classic stuff with long fade out
