DISAPPEARING - “Untitled”

Disappearing is a rule-based project of Rain Lucien Matheke, an interdisciplinary artist and cat mother based out of Los Angeles. Rain is a trans woman living with a rare primary immune deficiency disease. She holds a Master’s Degree in Visual Art from California State University, Northridge, and has exhibited and performed throughout California, as well as in Nebraska and New York. The result of the growing necessity for greater attention to themes explored in other live settings, disappearing is focused on the use of tape loops, tape machines, and effects as a means of exploring concepts of decay, loss, memory, and transformation. RIYL: noise! Experimental noise. Electronic experimental weird sounds.

1. “The Shell, Decayed” - 9:55 - first minute is fuzzy distorted noise; some parts of it sound like a distorted beachside to me - with what appear to me to be artifacts of seagull wave/tide sounds in a very distorted form. Cool sounds, for sure. Feels like a loop. 3:45 into the track things get real crazy noisy - in what feels like an aggressive way. At about 6:15 the noise transitions again and gets a little bit more focused. Not sure how to best describe it. Sounds kind of scary, like being trapped in a fire. I think this is a great example of the “transformation” that the promo describes as one of the concepts on this piece. Fades out on this third section.
2. “The body, disposable” - 9:52 - The noise creeps unquietly over the course of the first 20 seconds. Sort of stops and then starts again. Very ominous. Sounds like a large creature walking, falling down, and getting back up. The noise is a lot less noisy on this track compared to the first. Less thick. Some clearer tones coming in with waves of a variety of sounds coming in and out of the mix, adding dynamism to the intensity. This one sort of sounds like what I would imagine the inside of a washing machine to sound like. Things get quiet about 4:20 into the track and you can hear the sound of a microphone maybe getting moved around and what appears to be people talking in a room? Sound of water being poured. Water keeps getting poured and then some crazy sounds come in at 7min mark (you might need to turn it down a bit). The noise here is super interesting because it sounds like someone yelling almost. Very clear noise, not super thick. Again, not sure I’m describing this well but I Found this track to be super dynamic with lots of interesting sections that either blended together or had stark transitions.
