Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2019-01-23
Very local amalgam of noise rock, experimental, a dash of krautrock and psych all with a certain pop accessibility about this. Excellent recording captures analog synths, dirty noise guitars, big drums and bass with fitting male vocals. Moments smack of early 90’s “low fi” rock, like a Pavement on lots of drugs. Others recall experimental rock of late, delving into use of piano, fuzzed spoken found sound messages. But all retain a certain accessibility and song-like quality, like early Wire. Great stuff that was dropped off at the station by a member who is a longtime SLAC employee (I took one look at this record, the vinyl of which lovingly features a zipper on the cover like the Stones’ Sticky Fingers, and asked them to play Weds Night Live sight unseen. Sometimes its easy to have a good feeling about these things…)

1)* (5:48) killer panned dirty analog synth then great tribal drums, melodic tone and vocals makes it accessible. 2) (6:16) tone downed mellow guitar bass drums, song like as in early 90’s “low fi”, searing guitar leads and desperate delivery. 3)* (8:21) cool krautrock beat and tone, head noddin beat, beautiful synth noise symposium carries out last few minutes 4) (6:50) mellow guitar, piano, hand held tape recorder type voice over, becomes a midpaced somber affair when bass and drums bring the beat 5) (4:54) simple mid paced beat, somehow reminds me of old Wire (“think of a number...”)fuzzed vocals and on beat delivery, cool noise pop nod 6)* (5:54) dirgey feel in the minor riff and slow’ish plod 7) (4:24) cool noise guitar, voiceover about strange “evolution” of animals, great noise rock ensues at another slow plod, acoustic guitar in the laid back fray, slowly delivered lyrics
