INDIE FOLK
Led by songwriter/singer Justin Ringle, Horse Feathers is an indie folk band based in Portland, Oregon since 2004. He’s backed by acoustic & electric guitars, steel guitar, banjo, keys, strings (violin, viola), occasional reeds (alto & bass clarinet), drums, M & F vocals. Appreciation is the band’s sixth full-length CD; two others in Zookeeper have gotten reasonably good airplay. RIYL Fleet Foxes; Avett Bros; Band of Horses; Decemberists
No FCC issues.
1 ** Mid-fast. Bouncy, bright. Just getting through life. Good guitar, organ. (2:45)
2 Mid tempo. Love song with pleasant sound & good singing; too pop for my taste. (3:17)
3 * Mid-fast. Upbeat song about turning the page & moving on. Showcase for violin. (3:24)
4 Mid tempo. Band is good, esp. the strings. But song’s lyrics are less interesting. (3:11)
5 * Mid tempo. A bit country with very pleasing twangy singing & good pedal steel. (3:19)
6 Mid tempo. Urgent singing, seemingly with a story to tell, but I don’t understand it. (3:02)
7 * Mid-slow waltz time. Melancholy lyrics and strings. Compelling mixed voices. (4:14)
8 Slow. Tense, eerie feel. Something’s wrong, but it’s hard to say what. (4:19)
9 ** Mid-tempo. Confused by love; pleading to be understood. Band is at its best. (3:28)
10 ** Very slow. Moving love song with gorgeous string accompaniment. (3:47)
