NEO SOUL / R&B / JUMP
“Blue eyed soul” out of Seattle, in the form of a super tight 9-piece band (dueling electric guitars, sax-trumpet-trombone horn section, violin[!], bass & two drummers) backing up charismatic singer/shouter Jesse Butterworth. This is a fun, high-energy album all the way through. It’ll fit well on a lot of KZSU shows. All original songs except #8. RIYL Nathaniel Rateliff; Alabama Shakes.
No FCC issues.
1 Fast & loud. Album opens with some heat; lots of brass and male swagger. (3:29)
2 ** Mid-fast & big. Summertime; a pretty girl; the outdoors. What’s not to love? (3:56)
3 ** Mid-slow & soulful. A pleading, passionate ballad. Great singing & great horns. (3:44)
4 Mid-tempo. A bit sinister. Nefarious things are going on. (3:54)
5 Slow 6/8 time. Side 1 wraps up with a schmaltzy slow dance. (4:40)
6 * Fast. Side 2 starts w/ another burner. Sequel to track 1: similar theme but better. (3:17)
7 * Mid-fast love song. Old fashioned sweetness. Cute, suggestive (but clean) lyrics. (3:18)
8 ** Mid-tempo. A surprisingly good Pearl Jam cover. Grunge with horns. (3:51)
9 ** Slow. Oh my! A very personal expression of confidence & perseverance. An especially powerful vocal performance with fine accompaniment. (4:31)
10 Mid-tempo. Rollicking and bouncy. Lots of horns. Not as good as some others. (4:03)
