Steve Gunn reflects with a sense of self-vigilance in The Unseen in Between. It's a familiar notion for the Pennslyvania singer-songwriter, a roots-rock traditionalist whose intricate guitar playing speaks with such authority that it overshadows his personal thoughts. With his latest, The Unseen In Between—Gunn has resuscitated stylistic elements of guitar playing in a similar vein of J.J. Cale, Jim O'Rourke circa Bad Timing, and a little Jerry Garcia.

Play: 1, 2, 4, 8

.New Moon (5:10) Desolate harmonica drifts over a jazzy interplay of upright bass and strummed chords.
.Vagabond (5:01) Snaking downhill rockerwith lap steel guitars and whirring solos.
.Chance (4:25) A diaphanous hard luck story which recalls The Smiths.
.Stonehurst Cowboy (3:41) Impassioned track highlighting Gunn’s shrewdness as a musician.
.Luciano (5:53) Delicate track in this acoustic vein but subtly adds in strings and percussion.
.New Familiar (5:56) Spiralling off into modern-rock reveries replete with strings and other atmospherics.
.Lightning Field (5:00) Dreamy atmosphere and it's up to the listener whether or not they want to tag along.
.Morning Is Mended (4:00) Dark strings enhance the moody music that shifts from the finger-picked, early Pink Floyd-influenced reflection.
.Paranoid (5:15) Outer-space dream indie pop.
