Into the Soul - Josh Hyde (as told by Mr. Bones)
Looking for some nice laconic swamp pop seasoned with a dash of zydeco and blues for your listeners? Give this disk a spin. In his second release Hyde presents an authentic, heartfelt sound that perhaps is the result of use of analog equipment and no post production. As a Louisiana native he certainly knows how to spin stories about the area. Listening to him one can almost smell the gumbo cooking, hear the jazz playing and feel the warm moist breezes on a summer night down on the bayou.
RIYL: Lyle Lovett, JJ Cale, Tom Petty
*1 Rocking Chair - sweet, mid-tempo piano blues-funk ala Lyle Lovett (3:66)
*2 Smile - mid-tempo toe tapping blues-pop reminiscent of Steely Dan (3:12)
*3 For You I Ache - slow, passionate ballad lamenting love lost with nice piano (3:46)
*4 Lover's Curse - up beat shuffle with a spooky feel and red hot guitar/B3 interplay (2:55)
*5 The Edge of Love - JJ Cale-like swamp pop with a funky groove (2:42)
*6 Can't Let Go - fun, mid-tempo pop tune with nice key changes in the break (2:51)
7 The Key - gentle with nice organ & driving bass (2:52)
*8 Down on Bourbon Street - warm, lovely tune about falling in love in the Big Easy (3:06)
9 All You Need is Soul - beautiful story about walking the streets of New Orleans on a hot night taking in the sounds & smells (3:54)
*10 Call My Name - upbeat boogie with great slide work (3:49)
11 Reasons Why - slow ballad lamenting a fleeting love
* Mr. Bones especially likes these
