AFRO-LATIN INFLUENCED ROCK
Santana blends African, Latin, and rock influence in a powerful and highly listenable blend. Carlos Santana’s hard attack, gorgeous tone, and infinite sustain on lead guitar are as characteristic and unmistakable as ever. He’s joined here by Mallorcan singer Buika who sings mostly in Spanish, occasionally in English, and a bit (I think) of an African language.
No FCC issues
1 Slowish. Spoken intro by Carlos presents the African theme of album; then guitar & vocalist enter. Primarily a showpiece for guitar & drums. (4:48)
2 ** Fast. Mixed English & Spanish lyric. Afro-Latin percussion. Propulsive. Sounds much like the old Santana band, including a dialog between fiery guitar and organ. (5:43)
3 * Mid-tempo Afro beat. Shifts gears midway for some fierce shredding. Powerful. (5:59)
4 *** First half, the band stays out of the way of powerful vocal performances by both the lead and backup singers. Second half: a rocking instrumental by full band. Carlos shreads again, and Cindy Santana kills her drum kit. A masterpiece. (6:13)
5 Mid-slow. English lyrics recall memories of African scenes and ancestors. (9:08)
6 * Mid-tempo. Guitars & funky bass start, vocal joins. Afro-Latin jazz influence. (5:59)
7 * Mid-fast. Afro-Latin dance rhythm. English lyric. Accordion adds to party vibe. (4:30)
8 Mid-fast. Bouncy & fun African feel. Lyrics perhaps in an African language. (5:55)
9 Mid-fast. Afro-Latin feel. Spanish language out front dominating this song. (4:48)
10 Mid-tempo. Churning rhythm but gentle. Strong vocal with guitar & percussion. (5:52)
11 Fast. Hard rocking. Signature Santana style. Strong, exuberant finish to the album. (5:37)
