Heaven Before All Hell Breaks Loose – Plan B aka Ben Drew
In his 4th release Plan B morphs yet again. Starting out as a hard core east London rapper in Who Needs Actions’ , to suave soul man in The Defamation of’, he now delves into a hard driving synth-pop sound (with a bit of reggae & calypso for good measure). Like Bill Callahan’s Shepard’, this disk is a reflection on life changes. For the former it is entering middle age, while for Drew it is that of hitting 30 and becoming a father. The disk is definitely edgy but not outrageously so and even when it gets a bit too far for my ear I still appreciate the creative arrangements which feature exquisite interplay between piano and synths. Oh, and there are also his gut wrenching falsetto vocals.
RIYL: Fine Young Cannibals
FCC: 2, 9 & 10
*1 Grateful – spacey, emotional thank you to his family with echo & some vocoder effects (medium, 3:37)
**2 Stranger - nice piano, synth & violin interplay & great plaintive vocals (FCC, 3:38)
*3 Heartbeat - edgy pop that builds to powerful crescendo (fast, 3:49)
**4 Queue Jumping – love song with great juxtaposition of his falsetto against soaring synths & backing vocals (medium, 3:22)
**5 Wait So Long - Calypso/reggae with delicate guitar dancing over the vocals (fast, 3:38)
*6 Pushin’ - alternates between mellow talk-sing & heavy electronics (fast/slow 3:57)
7 Heaven Before All Hell Breaks Loose – slow start morphs to fast & chaotic (4:13)
8 It's a War - Reggae meets synth-pop in this lament over divide between rich & poor (medium, 3:01)
9 Guess Again - gritty story about police & right wing politicians with sirens & distortion (FCC, 3:30)
10 Flesh & Bone - fairly noisy story about his absent father (FCC, 3:55)
*11 Pursuit of Happiness - driving beat interspersed with slow & quiet interludes (fast, 3:54)
12 Mercy - driving EDM interspersed with soft orchestration (4:27)
13 Deeper - chaotic pastiche (medium, 4:01)
*14 Sepia - slow & beautiful start building to medium pace with nice piano/synth interplay (medium, 4:27)
