CONTEMPORARY FOLK

This second album from House and Land, a duo from Asheville, NC, offers an intriguing update of traditional folksongs and Appalachian old-time music with revised (more ‘woke’ acceptable) lyrics and mixed acoustic & electric instruments. You could call it experimental old time. Both Sarah Louise Henson and Sally Anne Morgan are multi-instrumentalists and vocalists. You’ll hear banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitars, & more… and excellent singing.

No FCC issues

1 * Mid-tempo. An old murder ballad, ‘Twa Sisters,’ with banjo & elec guitar. (5:07)
2 ** Slow. Celtic-style singing & lovely accompaniment. Goosebumps gorgeous. (5:33)
3 * Mid-tempo. Traditional doomed-soldier ballad with strong banjo playing. (3:13)
4 Very slow. Tragically somber with droning strings (cello?) and pipes. Tough going. (4:56)
5 *** Slow instrumental. Distorted elec guitar and fiddle. Really extraordinary. (7:46)
6 * Mid-fast. Bluegrass(-ish) style with banjo, fiddle, and that high lonesome sound. (2:45)
7 Slow. 18C Scottish folksong. Banjo, fiddle, pipes, contrapuntal singing. (5:13)
