Squeeze by SASAMI review
Squeeze is an album that was written as a classically composed movement, so it takes you through emotions of anger, resentment, disappointment, and longing. It hops from heavy metal to indie folk and much in between. The electric guitar and Sasami’s experimental lyrics are the highlights. Depending on the song, you can hear influences from artists like Fleetwood Mac, Wolf Alice, and Rina Sawayama. The genre-bending is insane- a goodie-bag of melding genres.
Favorites: “Say it,” “Call Me Home,” and “Make It Right”
FCC Violations: “Skin a Rat,” “Tried to Understand,” and “Squeeze”
01. skin a rat- (FCC Indecent) starts quiet then come quick with brooding rock- electric guitar and angsty lyrics, some screamo
02. The greatest- sincere lyrics over electric guitar and rock drums, cool guitar solo at the bridge
03. say it- more electronic, deep auto tune voice, still rocking, wolf alice meets churchvs meets rina sawayama meets heavy metal. (a favorite)
04. call me home- more acoustic and clear vocals, not as dark, though the lyrics are pessimistic. picks up in the last minute for more swirling sounds- layered vocals and instruments and a key change! (a favorite)
05. need it to work- repetitive lyrics, about 3 dif lines repeated throughout. rock drums and driving electric guitar
06. tried to understand- (FCC Profanity) more folk sounding, audible fleetwood mac influence, acoustic guitar and storytelling
07. make it right- driving electric guitar, if the carpenters were edgy, bridge picks up with volume and intensity with guitar riff then back to lyrics. (a favorite)
08. Sorry entertainer- heavy metal, angsty, even emo, screamo
09. squeeze- (FCC Indecent) creepy, much percussion, nirvana influence, brooding, lists violent/gruesome active verbs
10. feminine water turmoil- haunting amalgamation of cello and strings and bass and electric guitar (sasami is a trained composer so checks out) no lyrics. transitions nicely into next track so I rec you play both.
11. not a love song- great storytelling through lyrics, keeps the strings sound and sincerity, one of the most mellow tracks though electric guitar drones on
