NAVVI - V EP
Reviewed by Eva 2023-11-24
Genre of music: Synth-pop
Biographic Description: ‘V’ is the 5th release of Seattle-based group NAVVI, and their first release in the last 4 years. Chill club atmosphere, synth-pop beats carry the EP with relaxing house sounds sprinkled through out. Later in the EP, R&B drum and base rhythms are brought in and add to the atmospheric sound. I like that the EP carries this calm mysterious essence through out, with certain tracks bringing in a stronger beat that make it perfect for a late night walks and model struts. Lyrics throughout the EP follow a love theme, feeling seen by someone who you know may not be the best but you can’t help the experience of love.
Indicate FCCs: None
Favorite tracks:
• 3 (Ultimae). This is a strutting at night song. Pop-synth.
• 2 (Love)
Recommend if you like - mention artists that the record or band reminds you of
• Sylvan Esso
• Cannons
• ODIE
Brief description of each track
1. (5.27) Clemency: Starts of gentle, slowly fades into a ocean wave-like ephemeral sound. A stronger beat joins the song as it progresses. Airy vocals. A cool staccato effect, mimicking a boomerang tops off the song to it’s climax.
2. (3.18) Love: An R&B drum beat is introduced to the EP. More dramatic vocals than the other songs, comparable to Mitski vocal power. Has a mellow melancholy or subliminal feeling.
3. (4.04) Ultimae: My favorite song on the EP. Mimics a feeling of spinning, danceable. Whispering vocals back the melody, gentle vocals also re-introduced. My favorite part is around the 2 minute mark, the beat gets more intense and spaces out with few backing tracks. Very model-strut energy. Fades back to intro sound afterwards, leading to a calm exit to the next track. The most pop-heavy track on the EP.
4. (3.58) Blue Murciélago: Slightly more eclectic sound but keeping the synth-beats strong. The most fluid-sounding song on the album, very beach wave.
5. (4.10) IV: Synth back at it again. A funky baseline carrying through the song. Medium tempo, airy vocals. Slightly more R&B vocals.
