“Circus For Sale” Hungrytown
Indie folk, chamber pop duo based in Vermont, which at times sounds like they could be from Merry Olde England. This is the 4th album from vocalist and guitarist, Rebecca Hall, and multi-instrumentalist, Ken Anderson. Very diverse collection that at times veers into sunshine pop and classic genres such as Americana, Celtic and even light psych rock. Timeless, gentle and contemplative, with the occasional change of pace producing highly radio-friendly tunes. RIYL: Fairport Convention, The Corner Laughers, Fun of the Pier and Belle and Sebastian.

Recommended: 10, 7, 3, 1, 4. No FCCs noted.
1. (2:40) Another Year — Light, layered psych rock. Organ, electric guitar and occasional effects. Haunting vocals. ***
2. (3:03) Circus For Sale — Circus-like chamber pop with some psych sensibilities. March-like rhythm and harpsichord. Dreamy, wistful vocals. Inspired by meeting an audience member who said that he knew of an actual circus for sale.
3. (2:31) Feel Like Falling — Gentle and sad. Acoustic guitar with Hall’s crystalline vocals. Lush strings. This one is about Anderson’s mother. ***
4. (3:54) Man Of Poor Fortune — Classic folk in 3/4 time. Stately and slow waltz, with guitar and solo violin, which swells into a full chamber orchestra. ***
5. (3:45) Green Grow The Laurels — Traditional British folk song dating back to 1955. Banjo, guitar and organ — creating an Americana vibe.
6. (2:32) Trillium And Columbine — Wistful baroque composition. Shimmering vibraphone, guitar and strings. Lilting melody.
7. (3:15) Tuesday Sun — Lovely, jangly sunshine pop. Catchy bass line and simple tapping rhythm. Sweet vocals, with plenty of harmonies. A single. ****
8. (4:04) Morning Brings Peace Of Mind — Deliberate fingerpicked acoustic guitar over sustained organ. Terrific harmonica solo in the lead break.
9. (3:51) Gravity — Hushed and leisurely. Simple chamber pop led by Hall’s raw vocals over acoustic guitar and mandolin, with cello as a counterpoint.
10. (3:53) Little Bird — Up-tempo, breezy and bouncy. Harmonica opens. Banjo is mixed in over a simple, steady beat. Another single. ****
11. (2:44) Late New England (Afternoon In June) — Quiet and meditative. Chime-y electric piano. Some strings.
12. (2:15) Leaving — Short and sentimental. Elegant, church-like organ, guitar and cello with Hall’s simple vocals.
