From the environs of Low (Duluth) come fellow strange songsters, the unfortunately named, Dog Pookah. This CD is more stripped down even than their previous pair, getting into more minimal electric guit, sparse brushed drums or cardboard box style drums, no bass whatsoever, which really makes for emptiness, even compared to Low. Like Low there is a gentle female voclist, usually in the backs. The guy who sings up front has a whiskey weird quality, a la Johnny Dowd or the like. Most songs are pretty stipped down. The whole thing is bent and fucked up in a way I cant put my finger on. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are more connected to Low than by just their hometown. No liner notes to verify. Cool stuff.
1) minimal upbeat feel, fem backs
2) more dense, but similar to first
3) starts mellow and pretty then gets crashy and wacky
4) very mellow, balladlike with sparse low’esque fem backs
5) mellower but with sparse beat
6) lowder, crashy cymbals
7) pleasant, mellow, just weird enough 8) like previous
9) louder, upbeat
10) very pretty sparse piece
