Gotan Project: La Revancha Del Tango
Label: XL
This CD is in the acid-jazz/downtempo/dub/funk vein, but features Argentinean-inspired instrumentation (specifically tango instruments such as the accordion). There are some electronica/BPM remixes here. Most notable is the Astor Piazzolla classic film theme from “Last Tango in Paris”. Try: 2,4,8,11.
1. acid-jazz-y track w/ sad accordion (?) melodies & speech snippets
2. slow break-beats and smoky female vocals in Spanish
3. a downtempo track w/ some heavy bass & deep male vocals
4. a long jazz-y instrumental journey w/ some nice piano & accordion, kinda house-y
5. dubby bassline w/ some vocal snippets and accordion
6. again, a dubby bassline w/ smoky female vocals
7. big dubby bass and reverbed effects & samples
8. theme from “Last Tango in Paris” played on piano & accordion over funky bass & jazz beats (“Last Tango in Paris” is one of my all-time favorite movies)
9. an insistent bassline and build-up from piano
10. a slow downtempo track w/ big beats & accordion & tambourine
11. a deep-house remix of track #5 – not too bad
12. politically conscious hip-hop but not particularly exciting
13. stripped-down tech-y remix of track #5, some tweaky electronic warbly effects
