Bringing us some pretty decent shoegazer pop from Dayton, Ohio, the Lab Partners write songs with the pop sensibility of the Jesus and Mary Chain and the noisy-echoey-guitar-over-strummed-guitar approach of Galaxie 500. Both bands I really miss, and Lab Partners are a worthy reminder. While some of the songs are definitely a little too pop for me, other songs are gorgeous, well-constructed, and well-executed in terms of noise texture and melody. Think also of Slowdive/Mojave 3.
9, 4, 3, 6, 13.
1. mellow acoustic + voice pop song.
2. midtempo pop song with nice fuzz noise at beginning and end.
3. lazy and melancholic, ends with good noise texture. catchy.
4. melancholic w/nice reverby guitar melody. slow arching climax.
5. rockin’ groove and tremolo-ed texture straight from yo la tengo.
6. slow, spacey swing with epic build. nice organ sound.
7. midtempo, strummy. reminds me of late jesus & mary chain.
8. drony guitar noises building into a distant climax
9. **super sad, faraway vocals and strummed acoustic. gorgeous.
10. echoey guitar sounds producing a nice atmosphere.
11. long and slow 3/4, a sadness that goes on forever...
12. catchy sing along pop chorus
13. slow. intro of dissonant chords, then nice noisy twangy rock.
14. acoustic + voice. too sweet for my taste.
