CENGIZ ÖZKAN – “Saklarim Gözümde Güzelligni”
Kalan, 2003
TURKEY – A tribute to Âsik Veysel, a famous songwriter who emerged in the 1930s and for some decades after was among the most popular folk artists in Turkey. Özkan plays the baglama, an ancient lute common to folk music throughout Anatolia. He also sings in a sweet baritone moan. The songs are spare and very beautiful, and the quality of the poetry shines through even without translation. There is, however, a similarity from track to track (especially in the strumming) that can grate on your nerves after a while. Nothing spectacular, but contemplative and relaxing, a nice break.
All tracks about the same. Fo’s picks: 3, 5, 9, 10
2. 5:45 – gentle, repetitive
3. 4:46 – nice strumming & vox
5. 3:33 – sweet vox, lively strum
8. 7:25 – very gentle, a bit long
9. 5:05 – flows like storytelling
10. 5:09 – more aggressive vocal
