Yes! Forget about the New Pornographers, and meet yet another great band from Oakland, the Cuts. Awesome-awesome POWER POP with plenty of early-mid 70s proto-punk sound (Television, Elvis Costello, Roxy Music) meeting '60s psych (the Love) and pop (the Beatles ca '66-'69) elements. Stylistically, the lead singer is the perfect blend of Tom Verlaine and Arthur Lee. Lots of Beatlesque harmonies and melodies, nice organ sounds, great guitar kicks and twangs... all done right in the proto punk sense (Television) of it or borrowing Bill's words "just slammy". The Cuts not only pass the Mr Sparkle Chellenge, but they scream "Mr Sparkle" from miles away. For power pop done right, look no further. Play with bands of the LookOut Records powerpop sound (eg. Communique, the Oranges Band).
PLAY: **11**, **6**, 8 (for serious rockin' out), PLAY: 3, 1, 4 (great pop tunes).
((1)). Nice delicate organ/synth melodies. Prevailing tambourine. Melodic riffs and guitar solos nailing to the beat. A slammy mood.
2. Mainly a mid 70s classic rock feel. Their bridge between main groove and chorus is borrowing from Television big time. Singer sounds like Tom Verlaine.
((3)). "i'm losing sleep over the strangest things"... catchy, jangly, jumpy chorus, dreamy Beatlesque baroque-ish sequences of melody in between.
(4). 60s psych riff guitar work reminds me of the Love. Straight up power-pop chorus.
5. Syrupy guitar work and vox. Certain breaks and slams remind Elvis Costello. Television-ish guitar twangs toward the end.
((6)). It will tickle your punk bone. Twangy guitar solos and riffs. Garage-punky organ rocking out. Love this track. Coda rips the Love off.
7. Mid-tempo. Sugary, melodramatic and baroque. Psych pop melodies. Very vocal.
(8). Yet another Television-ish performance. A taste of guitar dissonance over melodic keys. Serious new wave attitude.
9. Mid-tempo, long-drawn track. Very average. Don't bother.
10. Mid-tempo. Happy-dreamy guitar riff, very much like early Elvis Costello. Catchy "ooh-ooh".
((11)). Fuck Yeah! Dare to rock out??? Get yah ass up on the board and crank this shit UP...!!! Make some fucking NOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISE!
