Greg Osby's love letter to his native St. Louis: a mainstream-sounding mix of covers that often slaps new chords and/or structures on old favorites (2,5).
Tends toward the easygoing side, eschewing the math-minded complexity of Osby's other albums. That may be a product of his new, younger band -- most notably, pianist Jason Moran is gone, replaced by 21-year-old Harold O'Neal. Happy stuff, recommended. And dig Osby's old 'fro on the back cover!
- Duke Ellington: slow and swingy, pleasantly retro, with some cool double-soloing near the end
*- Mid/fast Dizzy Gillespie tune stretched into 5/4 time
*- Monk tune, catchy and cute, on the slow side
- Soft and breezy
*- Laid-back minor key tune, some fast fluid soloing
- Midtempo and breezy
- Slow
- Happy mid/fast ramble
*- Slow demi-blues, with occasional off-kilter beats and dissonant chords. A pretty song.
