Free jazz compositions: Violin-bass-drums trio of all stars. Features quite a few good fast attacks, where the violin (Billy Bang) takes the forefront. Barry Altschul on drums and Joe Fonda on bass provide a solid backdrop.
Interesting note: The makeup is similar to the William Parker Violin Trio (also in rotation right now), but with a more open sound. Maybe that's because the Parker album is more composition-oriented ... or maybe it's just the recording technique, as the CIMP label uses a "natural" system that eschews post-production.
1- Upbeat and swinging
2- Soft and lingering intro ; scattery violin soloing
3*- Fast jam. Opens with a spirited drum solo.
4*- Cool little shuffle; Billy Bang lets the sparks fly.
5*- Sad melodic violin lines and a fleet, light-touch bass&drums duet, with a strong emotional finale. Quiet squeaky start.
6- *FCC* "shit" in the first few seconds of banter. Scratchy stacatto over free wandering bass & drums; an aggressive and nicely dry little improv
