Since this was released in 1973, many of the performers on this disc have died. This stands, however, as a gorgeous record of some of the finest mbira players ever. They play (and sing) with a passion and skill that is thoroughly compelling. The hypnotic melodies and complex rhythms throughout make this a total joy to listen to, and the extensive notes are fascinating. One star for every track!
1. Recorded live at a village ceremony to honor the dead.
Great sounds of chanting/claps.
2. Wonderful interplay of mbiras. Soothing & hypnotic. Mid.
3. Mbiras & percussion back soaring vocals. Midtempo.
4. M & F voices, complex mbira layers. Haunting, uptempo.
5. Simon Mashoko sings/plays mbira. Fast spoken work poetry & soaring vocals.
6. Solo mbira & shaker. Light w/delicate variations in tone.
7 Deeper mbira sound. Spare, haunting vocals. Wow.
8. Complex melody, shaker, vox. Recorded live in a village.
9. Deep vocals, bright mbira sound. Catchy.
