A three-CD set contrasting old and new Brand X. The band was part of the 1970s British prog-rock thing, but with deeper attention to jazz influences. In the '90s, they re-formed as a trio but with a harder-edged feel; guitarist John Goodsall had gotten into metal-derived guitar sounds for a more aggressive front.

Percy Jones, the bassist, is also still with the group. He's very much influenced by jazz fusion, with a rapid-fire, fluid sound on the electric bass.

"Trilogy" reissues two of the 1990s trio's CDs. It also includes a live set from the 1970s days, which included keyboardist Robin Lumley and drummer Phil Collins -- yes, THAT Phil Collins. Brand X was a side hobby of his during the Genesis days, back when he still cared about jazz drumming.

The 1990s stuff, by the way, closely resembles Percy Jones' prog/fusion band Tunnels. We've got two of their CDs in the library, one under Jones' name and one under Tunnels.
