Frog Eyes—The Golden River
SUPER melodramatic pop. Lush noisy drunken instrumental sound, MAJORLY dramatic vocals; he soars all around, always at top intensity, and frequently breaks into moments of impassioned falsetto. This is all (I hope) meant to be ironic; the pre-packaged review cites Tom Waits and Nick Cave. Tracks are called things like “Picture Framing the Gigantic Men Who Fought On Steam Boats,” and the lyrics, if you try to listen, are an opaque stream-of-consciousness mass of wackiness. Amusing (not playing for laughs, though), and pretty; if you like it, most any track is fun.

*1. (4:14) noisy waltzy tempo, like a drunken post-prom
*2. (1:29) fast, crazy merry-go-round with disjointed meter changes
3. (3:20) driven midtempo, strummy surfy guitars and pounded piano
*4. (4:26) a bit slower, but pushing and more desperate
*5. (3:37) a slower sort of torch song, background female harmonies
6. (2:08) lo-fi buzzy, hushed sound, like the Blair Witch Project of music
*7. (3:05) very Tom Waits-y—swirling carnival sound, mocking synth melody with chimes.
8. (3:01) slow ballady waltz, lots of electric guitar, cymbal crashing, and yelling; synth piano and chimes
9. FCC! (2:00) fast and headbanging; reedy wavery guitar. (FCC: quick “fucking” within the first 20 sec.)
*10. (3:43) triumphant strutting anthem, military drums, synthy, some female ooo’s
11. (0:34) lo-fi instrumental, dramatic music with loud drumming moving to metallic thumps; like a movie soundtrack recorded with a tape player.
