The first CD from all-girl Canadian band the Organ is EP length, with 6 songs
all under 3 minutes long. Vocals are very Debbie Harry, but the sound (organ
aside) is straight-up late 70s/early 80s depressive Northern English angst
rock. I would recommend playing any of these. It’s a shame they’re not longer.
Belying the name, the Hammond organ does not take over the music at all.
Instead, the never-too-complex organ parts are integrated extremely well into
the overall sound, letting the other parts, especially the lovely vocals,
shine. The album alternates between slow and fast songs, so looking back after
a couple listens, I might say these songs have room to branch out more – but
what the Organ does, the Organ does well. 100% clean.

1. Starts off heavy on the organ, but this is the only point on the CD
where the organ dominates. The organ is kind of creepy-sounding when you first
hear it, but that’s the Hammond for you. Sets the lyrical theme of life being
sucky and lonely.

2. Faster-paced, poppier. The guitar sound reminds me of early New Order.

3. A bit choppier melodically, slower than #2, got my head nodding.
The “la dee dah” singing is really, really Morrissey (the whole album is, in
fact). Great lyrics.

4. Title track – fast-paced once more, with more animated vocals, although
not very cheerful. Nice watery guitar sound.

5. Someone abducted the Cure’s bassist from “Pornography.” Kind of
plodding, with a very simple organ melody that lets the plaintive guitar line
come out. The lyrics are kind of overwrought at this point.

6. Such pretty, delicate vocals on this one – other instrumentation sticks
to the background.
