Lovely simple indie-pop with some of the best lyrics I’ve heard in a long time. Spare arrangements of acoustic and electric guitars and (mechanistic) drums, with varying amounts of distortion. Boring-Folk purists may dislike the quality of the vocals, which are produced by a male-female duet (this is not completely obvious) and tend to be pitchy, distorted and occasionally quietly shrieky. If you like Joanna Newsom or Devendra Banhart, though, you’ll feel right at home. No FCC’s.
1: Distorted murky guitars with uptempo percussion. Percussive bouncy vocals with the quiet shrieky quality of falsetto. Folky lyrics. (2:51)
2: More decipherable lyrics, same murky guitars. A little more melodic. (4:02)
3: Undistorted guitars, mellow percussion, more decipherable lyrics. (5:07)
4: Prominent vocals, simple beat, shy guitars. (3:16))
5: Crickets! Upbeat. A little like the Violent Femmes. Percussive guitars and vocals. (1:46)
6: Bluesy. Prominent vocals sound a little like Tom Waits. Very simple drums, bass, and traveling rhythmic guitar. (3:06)
7: Spare murky bass, squeaky guitar, mellow beat. Soft electronic noises. (3:24)
8: Chimey guitars. Sweet and melodic. “When will you come home?” (3:12)
9: Folky acoustic guitars, spare percussion, bluesy scatty vocals. (2:07)
10: Electronic rhythmic accompaniment. Ever-so-slightly growly pulsing guitars. Cleaner vocal delivery. The poppiest track on the album. “Everything is looking bright today / everything’s radiance / I knew that it would.” Likeable. (3:10)
11: Chimey guitars again. Flattened vocals. Spare accompaniment. Mechanistic drums with lots of brushed cymbal. (2:10)
