Cranky Mark E. Smith plus his latest bunch of sidekicks get in the groove with freight-train momentum and catchy (though not novel, by any means) hooks supporting Smith’s über-obscure mumblings. One that will improve The Fall’s batting average. Some of the highlights:
2. “Hey, Mr. Pharmacist”-shuffle
3. Pounding riff and shouted choruses; yeah, let it all out!
5. Nervous, insistent riff; annoying dissonance from the keyboards
6. Pleasant ballad
7. Rolling thunder bassline as Smith wheezes out verses then a catchy hook on chorus of “Open the goddamn box!”
9. Single-minded guitar riffing and Smith’s gruff vocals spitting out some invective regarding the titular “Mad Mock Goth”
11. Heavy and trashily noisy
12. Rudely noisy intro followed by cowpoke tale of America’s worst city
13. Lad shout-along over Gary Glitter riff competing with snatches of self-righteous TV news report about … a musician as if he were a footballer; like a conversation; brilliant!
