Shrimp Boat – [A Sampler Of] Something Grand
Eclectic indie rock out of Chicago, circa the late 80s & early 90s. Half the group went on to become Sea and Cake while the producer went on to work with Tortoise and other Chicago acts. But.. this doesn’t really sound like any of that. The liner notes drop Captain Beefheart, the Pixies, Albert Ayler, the Mekons and the Feelies, you could probably also throw the Velvet Underground and a dozen other bands in that list. The genius here is that these guys combined all of these influences and came up with a completely new category for themselves. Countrified post-rock? Bluesy indie pop? Free-jazz punk? You can decide later.. just play this now.
*1. Mellow post-rock anthem
**2. Driving rock
3. Wandering acoustic protest music
*4. Jazzy rock – slow and epic with lots
of Ollie North samples
5. Twisted folk music
6. Loud drinking song
7. Wacky experimental electronics
8. Free jazz interlude
*9. Jangly country shuffle
*10. Velvet Underground style slow and
drawn out.
11. Pretty ballad
*12. Jazzy instrumental
13. Rambling indie rock
14. Mellow rock
