Free-jazz quartet with lots of dynamic group action. Piano and sax keep even the most chaotic pieces rooted in jazz, while the bass and drums often produce a jerky-stacatto non-rhythm.
Overall mood is upbeat and a little playful -- these guys seem like they're having fun. Most tracks slip into a bubbly jam when all four members play; the two 10-minute pieces (6, 11) also provide space for each member to solo unaccompanied. Tracks are consistently good; play them all.
- Stumbly, halting flow
- Quiet plinking. Gets louder and dark
- Percussive popping, a really neat sound.
- Relatively lyrical sax melody
- Grooving. Starts with long tones over soft piano-drum patter.
- Agile unaccompanied solos in succession. Some nice playing here.
- Fast rumble. Hits a furious peak in the middle.
- Like 4, a lyrical sax melody
- Scattered and intense
- Light and calm, but fairly fast
- Calm and studious, with energetic solos
- Fast sparse knots. Playful and a bit goofy.
- Series of tumbling statements
- Quiet, thoughtful. High squeaking near the end.
- Catchy mid/fast riff on prepared piano
