A country-tinged pop/rock album; Elvis returning to his roots. A nicely varied set of grown-up tunes with Costello's overly clever lyrics and lots of color from Steve Nieve on keyboards. Those who love that stuff and don't mind Costello's country side (me, f'r instance) will have a good time.
"The Imposters" are Pete Thomas on drums and Steve Nieve on keyboards (i.e. most of The Attractions) plus a bassist and a few special guests including Emmylou Harris (8, 10, 13) and Lucinda Williams (3).
1*- A bubbling mid/fast intensity, chugging bass, wild keyboards. The non-country track.
2- Slowish
3- Bouncing country/pop . Duet with a gruff Lucinda Williams.
4- Mid/slow country rock
5*- Lightly bouncing rockabilly feel. Densely packed lyrics.
6*- Mid/slow waltz time
7- Midtempo chugging bar-band tune
8- Slow, gentle
9- Midtempo, a bit gruff
10*- Deeply country: slow, sad, depressing
11*- Rockabilly, energetic but not that fast
12- Slow, dramatic
13- Small, light, pretty
